William Ray “Coon Rod” Newbold, age 80, of Creal Springs, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on April 14, 2026, at MidTown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
William was born on August 16, 1945, in Carterville, Illinois, to William Howard Newbold and Bonnie Lou (Dalton) Davis.
In his younger years, William worked as a truck driver before spending several years as a coal miner. He later retired from the Williamson County Highway Department.
William is survived by his children, Dean (Sherry) Newbold and Deana Hogue; his grandchildren, Kristen (Seth) Gipson, Courtney Norris, Tiffiney (Anthony) Ice, Lacey (Nick) Davis, and Hanna Starnes; his great‑grandchildren, Jackilynn, Gauge Norris, Elijah Gipson, and Ella Davis; his sisters, Sue Anne Campbell and Mari Lou (Jerry) Jones; his special nephew, Steven Blackwell; and several friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Betty Ralls and Patsy Newbold; and his brother‑in‑law, Mike Campbell.
William enjoyed a life filled with simple pleasures and good company. He loved horseback riding, camping, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He especially looked forward to trips to Rector, Arkansas, and the annual Fourth of July picnic in Piggott, Arkansas—traditions he cherished.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Blue Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley‑Ross. In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated, and Steven Blackwell, along with close friends, will spread his ashes at his favorite horseback‑riding spot.
