Paul “Gene” Wicks Sr., 89, of Benton, Illinois, passed away on June 21, 2025, at Stonebridge Nursing Home. Born March 1st, 1936, in Harrisburg, Illinois, to the late Irvin and Marie Wicks.
He shared fifty-seven years with his wife, Vicki (Summers) Wicks. Paul spent 35 years with GTE, Frontier, and Verizon, where his work as a drafter, engineer, and right-of-way agent reflected his methodical mind, strong work ethic, and respect for structure.
A lifelong Shriner and 32nd-degree Freemason, Paul lived by the tenets of brotherhood, integrity, and service. He took pride in the teachings and traditions of the Masonic order and carried those values into the aspects of his life.
Outside of work, Paul channeled his skills and focus into model aviation, competing at the national level and contributing to communities like the National Free Flight Society and the Society of Antique Modelers. His appreciation for craftsmanship extended to antique engines and his involvement with MECCA, reflecting a lifelong respect for how things are made—and the hands that make them.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Linda Kay Owen; and his son, Gregory Wicks.
Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Vicki; his son, Paul Jr.; stepson, David Bonucchi; grandsons, William and Ian Wicks; and his brother, Loren Wicks.
