John Michael Burke

John Michael Burke, 71, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away at his home on May 17, 2026.

Born on November 22, 1954, in Herrin, Illinois, he was the son of Charles S. Burke and Shirley (Eldridge) Burke.

John worked as a painter for Neon Signs for five years and later as a cook and "food sampler" at Teddy’s Sports Bar & Grill in Herrin for seven years.

He enjoyed cheering on Herrin sports teams and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. John loved spending time at local establishments around town, listening to music, and fishing. He was a person who preferred to fly below the radar, keeping life simple and avoiding unnecessary fanfare. Despite his quiet nature, he had many friends. He was also a former member of the Herrin Elks Lodge.

John is survived by his lifelong friend, Art Ramsey; friends David Boren and Dave Hoague; and many other friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Burke.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
