James R. “Jim” Gilley, age 59, of Tunnell Hill, passed away surrounded by family on September 19, 2025. He was born on September 22, 1965.

He was raised in Owensboro, Kentucky, from six months to 13 years of age before moving with his family to Marion, Illinois, where he continued to grow and build lifelong connections.

Jim will be remembered as an intelligent, supportive, generous, loving, and funny man whose presence brought warmth and laughter to those around him. His kindness and strength touched the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Shari R. Gilley, and their children: Brockton Gilley, Brandon (Danielle) Gilley, and Emily (Clint) Emery. He was a proud grandfather to Ellie Gilley, Jack Emery, Mariah Emery, and Luke Emery. He is also survived by extended family and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Gilley and Doris A. Gilley.

Jim built a fulfilling career through positions at WPS, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri, and Meyer Network. Most recently, he worked at Progress Rail, a role he truly cherished and often described as his favorite. His dedication, intelligence, and work ethic were evident throughout his professional life, and he was deeply respected by colleagues and friends alike.

He found his greatest joy in his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He also loved fishing, duck hunting, admiring show cars, and his lifelong fascination with planes and trains. As a talented drummer, he cherished music and the rhythm it brought to his days. After a long day, he enjoyed nothing more than relaxing in his favorite recliner. His passions reflected his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and his ability to find joy in both adventure and quiet moments.

Jim lived his life with compassion, integrity, and humor. His legacy of love and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Blue Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley-Ross. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
