Born on August 28, 1946, in Creal Springs, Illinois, Harold grew up with a strong sense of duty and curiosity. He began his higher education at Southern Illinois University (SIU) but soon felt the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Navy, embarking on a distinguished 22-year career that culminated in the rank of Command Senior Chief at PMRF Barking Sands, Kauai, Hi. His leadership and dedication left a lasting impression on those who served alongside him.

Following his military service, Harold continued to pursue his interests with vigor. An advanced amateur radio operator, he found joy in connecting with people across the globe through the airwaves. Engaging in conversations over long distances and locally, he embraced the technical challenges and camaraderie of the hobby forming lifelong friendships, as a result.

Harold cherished time spent outdoors- fishing and hunting were among his favorite pastimes. He also had a fond love for karaoke and cruising the seas with his sweetheart.

Harold’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Iris Hartwell; five children-Laura, Teresa, Zena, Zanthia, and Elijah; 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild who brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his siblings Charles, Michael, Kathy, and Glenna; as well as a host of extended family members and friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Sherry Hartwell and his son William Hartwell.

A private graveside service and celebration of life will be held to honor Harold’s memorable time here on Earth.

May Harold L. Hartwell’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who value service, family, and lifelong learning.
