Edward “Grant” Groat, born November 25, 1958 in Festus, Missouri, passed away at his residence in Marion, Illinois on January 20, 2026.
Grant was passionate about crafting knives for trading and selling, his pet dog, “Gaby”, old sci-fi movies, and 70’s music.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Fischer; his sister, Suzanne Gaylord Janssen, her husband, Daniel Janssen, niece Lauren Gaylord of Germany and nephews Levi Janssen and Roy Janssen of the Netherlands. Additionally he is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins from across the United States who will remember him with love.
His Uncle Dave and Aunt June Cooper, along with their sons, David, Brad and Hamp of Oklahoma, held a special place in his heart for their kindness and always “leaving the light on” in case he needed a place to go. He would have truly appreciated the support his cousins on both sides of the family have offered during this time. We would also like to thank, his cousin, Diane Gonzales for giving him his final ride to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Grant Groat Sr., grandparents Albert and Edith Groat, and many other family members.
Brinkley-Ross Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. There will be no public service in Marion. Edward Grant Groat Jr. will be laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, where a memorial service will take place.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may go to Vets and Pets of Southern Illinois at vetsandpets-si.org.
