Cheryl Ponder Whitehead

Cheryl Laurette Ponder Whitehead, age 77, of Marion, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on December 2, 1947, in Herrin, Illinois, Cheryl was the daughter of Ameul and Maurine Ponder. She graduated from Marion High School and later pursued her interest in beauty by attending beautician school. Her career path led her to a valued position as an executive secretary with Enterprise Leasing, where she worked.

A devoted reader throughout her life, she found comfort and inspiration in the quiet company of books.  Though private by nature, her presence was deeply felt by those fortunate enough to know her well.

She is survived by her son, Darren Whitehead; her sister, Sharon (Gary) Bundren; her brother, Mike (Florence) Ponder; and her grandchildren: Zach Faulkner, Brittany Adair, Janae Whitehead, and Bruce Whitehead. She also leaves behind nephews, Mike (Mellissa) Bundren, Jeff (Patty) Bundren, and Andy (Ashley) Ponder, along with numerous niece and nephews, and a grandchild.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sheila Winters; and her grandson-in-law, James Adair.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Blue Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley-Ross. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, with Pastor Adam Brown officiating.
