Barbara Ann O'Connor

Barbara Ann (Hellberg) O’Connor, born September 7, 1948, in Marion, Illinois, passed away on September 16, 2026, at Herrin Hospital.

Barbara was the daughter of Harold Hellberg and Helen Garris.

Throughout her life, Barbara was a hardworking and caring woman. She worked in housekeeping at Motel 6 and as a waitress at a local truck stop before attending John A. Logan College at night to earn her CNA certification. She was a longtime employee of Ray White’s Nursing Home and later worked as a CNA at Herrin Hospital and provided private in-home healthcare. Barbara eventually retired from her career to devote her time to caring for her husband.

Barbara married Bernard O’Connor Sr. on February 21, 1989, in Kentucky. Together, they shared 19 years of marriage.

Some of the best memories of Barbara could be found around her home and with the people she loved. She was known for her blackberry cobbler, her amazing Halloween parties, hayrides and bonfires. More than anything, Barbara treasured spending time with her family and creating memories with those she loved.

Barbara is survived by her children, Bernard Lee O’Connor Jr., Wayne A. O’Connor and Nancy James; grandchildren, Danny Wayne O’Connor, David Ray O’Connor, Julie O’Connor, Sylvia Rose O'Connor, and Dakota James; sisters, Wilma Fofar and Roberta Carter; along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; infant son, Scotty O’Connor; brothers, Harold Hellberg and Wayne Hellberg; sister, Rosetta Mae Stapleton; and nephew, Bobby Stapleton.

In accordance with Barbara’s wishes, she will be cremated, with inurnment to follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
